The stars are constantly changing. Summer does not look like Winter. Everything is in a constant state of change, like our lives?
Do you see the North Star in life?
When I look to the heavens what do I see? Stars, light coming out of a vast amount of darkness. What can I observe in that darkness? Something my grandma taught me. She once said, “I am the last living person I know in my generation. Everyone else I know is now dead and gone.” What does that mean? It means as she has gone through life everything she has ever known has been changing all throughout her life. Life has not stayed the same. Things look different today, then it did a few years ago. If you look to the stars you can see that kind of a message, as you look up at different times of the year the heavens do not look the same. Everything in life is constantly changing. For some this means no stability, no direction, lost without direction.
I think back through my life and I can see the same thing happening. I recently asked a few kids have you ever heard of The Moody Blues, Simon and Garfunkel, Keith Green, John Denver and they had never heard of those “stars.” If I were to look to the movie industry I could name quite a few “stars” that we do not see very often any more, Diane Keaton, Sally Field, Kate Jackson, Demi Moore,
Or in the world of television, Lucille Ball, Jaime Sommers, Minnie Pearl, Bea Benaderet, Sharon Tate or Patty Duke. I could go on and on. So what does this tell us? For some it brings discouragement even depression. They look at life and find nothing they can count on. No stability, everything constantly changing with no direction in life. Which way to turn? What to do? They seem to be lost and without direction.
This kind of reminds me of one very funny star, “Robin Williams.” He made a lot of wealth playing a funny guy in movies. I never liked his stand up “comedy” routines. I found them vulgar and crass so I did not watch those. But looking at his career, he was funny in “RV,” Popeye, Hook, Mrs. Doubtfire. He often played characters that struggled with connecting and having good family relationships, Mrs. Doubtfire was a very good example of that and tragically he ended his life alone in his home.
Many "stars" of yesterday are gone today.
Where can you turn in all of this instability and constant change? The North Star. It is interesting that amongst all of this change there is one star that stands out and gives direction in life. Sailors have for centuries used the north star to guide them home and to navigate the seas when there is nothing to see on the horizon but more sea. No land to direct them, to show them where they are at or where they are going or if they are actually going anywhere.
In life people often say that life is nothing more than a random bunch of events that have no meaning or no direction but if they look closely, they will find that that is not true. Look to the heavens, even in all of the change in the stars you can see patterns that are there at different times and different seasons and if you miss that message you can see one star that stands out above all the rest and can point you north. Give you direction. This is God’s way of saying look up and search for me and you will find me and I will bring direction to your life along with purpose and meaning.
Why doesn't everyone find meaning and purpose?
God says he searches throughout all the earth looking for something. That something is a person who is humble and contrite. To that person, He will reveal himself and show more and more of who He is and what He is doing in life. God promises that He will never leave us nor for sake us but what we have to be, are people who are willing to be taught.
My daughter was recently at the beach and she was pondering the waves. Where do they come from? Why do they come only so far and stop? Everywhere you turn you will see that life is not happening accidentally. There is purpose and a plan. The stars are not thrown randomly in the heavens as if by accident. There are carefully placed and are moving across the heavens in order and cohesion together.
Can I be a person with meaning and purpose?
What can I do? Be that person. Look to the heavens and not marvel only at the creation itself, but humble yourself and say, God there is a design in everything I see, so there must be a designer. Would you please reveal yourself to me and show me who you are and what you want from my life? Then open His book, the Bible, that He had written down for all of the ages to read and understand who He is and what He is doing in life. He will start revealing Himself to you and you will no longer see confusion and randomness in life. You will start seeing and knowing creation in all of its beauty but you will also start to learn of the creator who was able to think it all up and was also able to speak it all into existence.
